Periodontology (Periodontal Treatment)
Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting stuctures are known as the periodontium which includes the gingiva, alveolar bone, cementum, gingiva around implants and periodontal ligament.
Bleeding gums can be a sing that you have or are at risk for gumdisease. Healthy gingiva are pale pink and the surface like an orange. Untreated gumdisease will cause gums and tissues that support the teeth are destroyed, the teeth may become loose and have to be removed.
Surgery might be necessary if inflammation and deep pockets remain following treatment with deep cleaning and medications. In some cases soft tissue graft in which synthetic material or tissue taken from another area of the mouth is used to cover exposed tooth roots.
Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors associated with the development of gumdisease. Smoking can lower the chances for succesful treatment.
